The Best diet for the brain might also be the one most commonly prescribed for a healthy heart according to to recent research. The Mediterranean diet that is rich in beans, seeds, nuts, legumes, leafy greens, fresh vegetables and fruit, low in dairy, red meats and consuming fats from olive oil: this diet is the most commonly prescribed. With dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases in the brain on the rise second to only cardiovascular disease, is it not time to start looking after the brain now?

Hardman, R,. et al (2016) reviewed all the papers produced on diet and brain health between 2000 and 2015 investigated 135 papers. A direct quote from the study “The utilization of a dietary pattern, such as the MedDiet, will be essential as part of the armamentarium to maintain quality of life and reduce the potential social and economic burden of dementia”. What that means is that the Mediterranean diet provided positive effects on cognition including attention, memory and language. These findings show improved brain function through consuming the Mediterranean diet and may also help people with neurodegenerative diseases.
With the rise of dementia and other neurodegenerative that affect the brain which results in death that is only rivalled by cardiovascular disease it’s time to look at how our diet can positively affect the brain. A review of all the papers produced on diet and brain health between 2000 and 2015 revealed adherence to The Mediterranean diet keeps the brain healthy with the added benefit of keeping your arteries flowing.
